The Project Objectives were to 1) Reduce nutrient loading from irrigated pasture and upland
runoff along the Florida River by increasing irrigation efficiency and protecting riparian areas;
and 2) Conduct education and outreach. Improve organizational capacity and momentum for
water quality improvement projects in the Animas River Watershed. In order to achieve these
objectives, AWP worked with four adjacent landowners to implement BMPs along the Florida
River. The Project fenced 2.2 miles of Florida River channel to protect roughly 48.3 acres of
native riparian buffer, and converted 31.2 acres from flood to gated pipe irrigation.
