Citizen Superfund Workgroup
is hosting a tour of some of the 48 mine sites listed under the Bonita Peak Mining District Superfund site.
Saturday, September 9th, meet at the Silverton Vistors Center at 9:00am. There we will consolidate into as few vehicles as possible. The roads we will travel are not too rough, but we will need four-wheel drive for traction. There is a high probability of thunderstorms, so bring warm clothes, a raincoat, and sturdy shoes. Also, bring a lunch. (Sandwiches are available for purchase across the street at the Silverton Market, but they may be limited in number.) We will probably start with sites up Mineral Creek and then go a short way up the Animas drainage and end with Cement Creek. We will plan to eat lunch outside in Silverton. The tour should be very informative. Hope to see you Saturday!
The Animas Watershed Partnership, Animas River Stakeholders Group, Trout Unlimited and Animas River Community Forum are partnering to host the Citizen Superfund Workgroup community meetings to identify the goals and outcomes that citizens hope to see produced by the Bonita Peak Mining District Superfund process.
